How to Choose a Semester Abroad Program

You know all of the benefits of studying abroad for a semester, as well as many great semester abroad programs, but do you know how to choose the semester abroad program that’s best for you?

If you’re having trouble deciding which study abroad program to join or which country to visit, then you can use the following checklist to help decide on your preferences:

Length of Stay

  • How long do I want to be abroad?
  • Do I want to stay a few weeks or an entire semester?
  • Can I handle being away from home for more than 2 weeks?

Goals and Expectations

Cost of Trip

  • Can I afford the entire trip, including housing, food and travel costs?
  • Does my college offer any study abroad scholarships?
  • Did I talk to my study abroad adviser about total costs?
  • Will I need a student loan to pay for my trip?

Study Abroad School

  • Does the school have a good study abroad program?
  • Will I be able to study in my area of interest?
  • How big are the classes?
  • Does the school offer social activities?
  • Is the school located near a major city or is it more secluded?
  • Are any classes taught in English?
  • Will I live on-campus, in a hostel or with a host family?

Location

  • Did I research the countries I am interested in?
  • Do I want to be in a warm or cold climate?
  • Am I interested in the culture of the country?
  • How much is the cost of living?
  • Will I have easy access to a hospital if necessary?
  • Do I know how to speak the language?
  • Have I read books about the country?

Study Abroad Program Provider

  • Will I join a semester abroad program through my school?
  • Do I know of any independent study abroad organizations?
  • Does the independent organization have good customer reviews?
  • What are the payment policies?

If you ask yourself these questions then it will be much easier to rule out certain locations or study abroad programs.

You’ll have a better idea of exactly where you want to go and what you’ll need to do to get there. And most importantly, you’ll know what you will be getting out of this unique experience.
