Study Abroad Philippines University Programs

Higher education plays a significant role in the Philippines, just as it does in America. Students from around the world travel to the Philippines to take classes that range from learning English to studying the history of the country.

  • If you are interested in learning about Philippine culture one of the most recognized research schools in the Philippines to offer a complete immersion program is the University of the Philippines-Diliman. The college offers over 94 undergraduate and graduate courses, many of which are taught in English and include full integration into Filipino society. The school also has a sunken garden, shopping stores, a bowling center and other facilities located on or near campus to enjoy once classes are complete.
  • One of the oldest institutions in the Philippines is The University of the Visayas, which has eight campuses throughout the country that specialize in training students in the medical field. The motto of the university is “Love and Service to Humanity,” and it practices this motto by preparing students for careers that can help expand community development in the country. Programs range from classes in dentistry and medicine to pharmacy and business administration. Since the colleges are located in different cities international students have a chance to see more of what the Philippines has to offer.

Other universities in the Philippines include:

Modes of Transportation in the Philippines

The Philippines is comprised of over 7,000 islands, and only about 14% of the roads in the country are paved. To accommodate the land area and state of the roads the Filipinos use various modes of transportation:

  • The most popular mode of transportation in the Philippines is known as the jeepney. These vehicles were traditionally made from U.S. military jeeps during World War II, but since then they have been redesigned with roofs, more seating and vibrant colors.
  • Buses are also another popular way to travel throughout the country. You can choose between regular buses and charter buses that travel between cities. Air conditioned buses cost twice as much as non air conditioned buses, but you should probably pay the extra money since it can get quite hot in the summer.
  • Another way to travel if you are in the downtown area is by the Light Rail Transit, which doesn’t cost a lot of money and conveniently takes you to the most popular downtown areas.
  • Ferry boats that can hold up to 60 passengers also take passengers across the waterways and into surrounding islands.
  • Taxis are also widely used in the Philippines. Most taxis are air-conditioned and the drivers are friendly, but just beware that you are not scammed by a driver who says he has a broken meter!
  • Car rental is another option when traveling in the Philippines, but just be sure that you have a valid international drivers license.

Currency Exchange Rates for the Philippines

Filipino currency is known as the peso. You should always know the exchange rate between U.S. dollars and any foreign currency before you travel so you will be prepared to make purchases without any trouble.

Here’s what you need to know about the peso:

  • Coins = 25 sentimo, 1, 5, and 10 peso
  • Bills = 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 peso

You can use a currency converter like the one here to compare other amounts of U.S. dollars against the peso.

Study in the Filipino Capital of Manila

The Philippines capital of Manila is home to over 14 million people and is a bustling city full of things to do. Whether you’re into fine dining, clubbing, shopping or sports facilities, you’ll always find something of interest to do after classes.

Some of the best places to visit in Manila are:

  • Students studying the history of the Philippines or who just enjoy learning about the past can visit Fort Santiago, which was built by the Spaniards in 1570 and was the site of the execution of national hero José Rizal.
  • If you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy the surroundings you can visit Rizo Park. This major tourist attraction is the perfect place for a picnic, a concert and many other forms of entertainment.
  • You can walk by Malacañang Palace if you want to see where the President of the Philippines lives. Although you can’t go inside to see the rooms you can walk along the river and enjoy the scenery.
  • The oldest district in Manila is Intramuros, which means in Spanish language “within the walls.” It was built in the 16th century by Spaniards and is now home to some of the Philippines’ top higher education institutions.
  • Animal enthusiasts can visit the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, which showcases over 800 animals.

Any city that you visit when you study in the Philippines will have opportunities for you to expand your educational and cultural interests.
