What is an ISIC and Why Should You Get It?

You mad the decision to study abroad, and now you want to make the most of it. The only problem is that with the exchange rate, your dollar doesn’t go as far as you’re used to. The International Student Identity Card, or ISIC, can give you thousands of discounts during your study abroad experience.

The ISIC student card is the only internationally-recognized student ID card. Its global abilities make the discount opportunities endless, and easy to keep track of. The card also gives discounts domestically in the states! Some of the more popular discounts involve transportation, entertainment, shopping and culture. Specific examples for domestic spending and spending while studying abroad is:

  • 15% off Water Country USA
  • 34% off the Young Persons railcard in London
  • 2 Euro discount on cultural tours and free weekend supplements in Madrid, Spain
  • 2 AUD off the National Dinosaur Museum in Canberra, Australia

The total amount of discounts the card gives is 40,000 in 120 countries, used by over 4.5 million students. We’ve already given you the low-down on the basic facts on our International Student Identification Card page, but this blog is to go a little more in depth.

There are other cards issued by the ISIC association; the IYTC card for youth travel, and for people teaching abroad, there is the Teacher Identity Card, or TIC. However, the ISIC accounts for 95% of the card sales.

The card can also be used for online purchases and deals. The new ISIC design, issued in 2008, made the card functions easier to use online and made it easier for partners to incorporate their logos while still being able to recognize the ISIC identity.
