Drexel Professor Protects Wildlife of Bioko Island

Gail Hearn is a professor in the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Drexel University, and she’s an avid supporter of protecting the wildlife of Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. So much in fact that she has been going about five times a year, for three to four weeks at a time, for the last 10 years!

This kind of environmental commitment got her featured in the August edition of National Geographic magazine.

Of course Hearn spends 80% of her time in Philadelphia teaching at the college, but she makes sure to incorporate her studies overseas into her teachings so her students can learn about biodiversity.

The most amazing thing about Drexel is that it offers a study abroad program that works with students from the National University of Equatorial Guinea. The students are able to study the Bioko Island and its inhabitants, such as the Leatherback sea turtle, and help Hearn with her research.

Starting in the fall Drexel University will offer students a chance to travel to Bioko Island twice a year, which will not only build relationships with the people of Equatorial Guinea, but will also prepare students for a career in environmentalism.

Here is the full article.

It’s great to see that study abroad programs are incorporating studies of the environment in them, instead of just focusing on the social aspect of a country. This is the perfect way to see how students can learn about global warming and humanitarianism in a single trip across the world.
