On Saturday, July 25, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told a group of educators in Washington that his country plans to send over 500,000 students abroad over the next 5 years. The Iraqi students will be taking advanced studies classes in the U.S. and London, all in hopes of rebuilding the country’s once strong education system.

Malki said of this initiative, “Instead of armies and war and killing and occupation we’re moving to something more meaningful, namely economic development, education, and exchanges of students and professors.”

About the Iraqi Students Abroad Program

This scholarship program will be run by Iraq’s Higher Committee for Education Development, and there will be no discrimination based on sex or religious views of the students.  The scholarships will go to students focused in these areas of study:

    • Engineering
    • Education
    • Information technology
    • Business law
    • Medicine

Although it will cost about $50,000 per student, Iraqi’s parliament has secured $54 million for the initial students abroad pilot program.

This is a great opportunity for both Iraq and the U.S. to build stronger relations and to focus on the educational development of both countries.
