The Road to Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, has been a Christian pilgrimage that has existed for over a thousand years in Spain. It is classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and gets up to 250,000 visitors a year.

Next year 8-10 students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham will get to study abroad in Spain with their associate professor of Spanish and visit this amazing cultural destination.
On the Road to Santiago
In order to be completely immersed in the culture of Spain, Dr. John Moore and the UAB students will travel the road to Santiago by foot. Although this trip will take about a month to complete by foot, the travelers will get a chance to see the many historical sites and monuments that appear along the road.
The trip will occur in 3 phases:
- Phase 1 - Students will travel in groups of 4 from Roncesvalles to Burgos
- Phase 2 - Students will travel in groups of 3 from Burgos to León
- Phase 3 - Students will travel at their own pace from León to Santiago de Compostela
Along the way the students will meet for either lunch, dinner or both. When the students reach the Cathedral of Santiago they will not enter until everyone has arrived.
Dr. John Moore says of the study abroad program, “the road to Santiago opens up possibilities for transformation,” and this is definitely a unique opportunity to transform the lives of the UAB students.
