Last May a few football players from Vanderbilt University, as well as 10 other students, traveled to study abroad in Greece for one month. This was due to the discovery by the Vanderbilt athletics program in 2002 that no athletes had ever studied abroad. The university decided that this needed to change, so the athletes were encouraged to apply for summer study abroad programs.
What the football players got out of the study abroad Greece trip was more than just good food.
Score for the Team
Tailback Gaston Miller and safety Joel Caldwell became the first two Vanderbilt football players to join the study abroad Green program. They are only 2 of 16 athletes from Vanderbilt to study abroad since 2008. Both students were able to earn study abroad grants that paid for most of their trip.
Some of their memories from the study abroad Greece trip were:
- Eating “cheap and tasty Greek gyro” food
- Encountering a wild pig in Delphi
- Drinking wine at sit-down restaurants
- Eating a McDonald’s McFarm sandwich
Overall, the football players had an amazing time, and it ranked right up there with winning a second bowl tournament.
It looks like Vanderbilt will definitely get more athletes to study abroad from now on!
